Action-adventure game Shenmue II was created by Sega AM2 and released by Sega for the Dreamcast in 2001. Yu Suzuki handled the directing, producing, and writing. Shenmue II has quick time events, brawler fights, and open-world settings similar to the first Shenmue (1999). It has a night and day cycle, shifting weather effects, non-player characters who have daily routines, and several minigames. As Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist, travels to Hong Kong in 1987 in search of his father’s killer, the player controls Ryo. He travels to Kowloon and the Guilin mountains, where he meets a girl who will play a role in his fate.
Shenmue II was partially created concurrently with the original Shenmue, which at the time was the most costly video game ever made. The Dreamcast version was not published in North America, where Microsoft obtained platform exclusivity, although an improved port was made available for the Xbox in 2002. Shenmue II earned favourable reviews for its scope and narrative, but the port garnered less favourable comments from reviewers who thought its graphics lagged behind those of other Xbox games. It has been on numerous lists of the best video games ever made.
